MARY KERR

ABOUT

Past work:

Jesus helped me get my first job in film. Not Jesus of Nazareth but the actor who played Jesus in the 1977 film of the same name.

I started work as a casting assistant, working on films such films as Alfie, Derailed and King Arthur and then worked in pre-production at Miramax and on-set as an assistant before heading to New York to study directing. I’ve directed a number of music videos and my documentary Radioman is now showing on Sky Arts. I still speak to Radio every month.

I would describe myself as dark humoured with a social conscience. I love storytelling, challenging people’s perspectives on social issues and using humour in my work.

Past life confessions:

I was once an elf in Selfridges. I went on to have my own Santa/elf company but I fell out with Santa in the first week of Advent and secretly enjoyed when he blanked on names. I once slept in the gym after locking myself out of my apartment in New York and had to pretend to be exercising throughout the night. The other time I locked myself out I slept next to David Blaine floating in a sphere of water. Before SCA, my only interaction with the ad world was when I was asked to be the before girl in a gym commercial.

When the environmental campaigner Lewis Pugh swam The Thames and walked to 10 Downing Street, it was me dressed as the Polar Bear that accompanied him. I once joined singers anonymous for people who can't sing but love singing. I wish I was taller. I wonder what life would be like if I was. I can’t walk in high heels.
